Movie review SERENITY

What Can I say about this movie? It was fantastic. A great ride! Serenity is a combination of the best parts of all the sci-fi fantasy films that we have loved throughout the years. Captain Mal Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) is a mix of captain Kirk, Han Solo, and Indiana Jones. He is a futuristic Robin Hood who leads his group of merry men and hot girls into missions that have them stealing from the rich (the federation) and then keeping it. This movie takes place 500 years in the future. The federation is the ruling body in the galaxy that is obviously made up of the USA and CHINA. Earth became so populated they had to move humans to other planets.
this of course led to space being like the wild west as settlers are out to stake their claim in the new land of space. There are also REAVERS. The crazy insane killers of the universe who are everyones enemies. The bad guys are definitely the federation who as it turns out takes gifted children and turn them into assassins (I think) One of these children, River Tamm is rescued from the federation by her brother, Simon. He needs a place to hide so he hitches a ride on Captain Reynolds ship which is named Serenity. Thats pretty much the only set up that you need to watch this movie. As you can predict the federation wants their special pupil River back. They will stop at nothing to get her. Of course the captain has to make the decision whether to dump the cargo of the siblings or stick with them and risk the life of his crew.

Joss Whedon does a nice job of writing this movie. The dialogue is fast paced and yes, funny. The action is at times very star wars or indiana jones like. Late in the film the crew visits a barren planet that has an amazing Star trek feel. The fight between Mal Reynolds and the bad guy assassin the federation sends to kill the crew is brilliant. This movie was FUN. This movie made me forget all the crap going on in my life that I dont want to think about. That to me is all you can ask of a movie. On top of it all is the fact that this movie looks great. You leave the theater telling yourself you cant wait for it to come out on dvd. 4 and 1/2 out of 5. go see this film.
